The Nationalmuseum is Sweden's museum of art and design. It is also a government authority with a mandate to preserve cultural heritage and promote art, interest in art and knowledge of art. The Nationalmuseum also administers the National Portrait Gallery, on display at Gripsholm Castle and administers the collection of Gustavsberg porcelain.
The collection encompasses paintings, sculptures, drawings and prints from 1500-1900 as well as applied arts, design and portraits from the early Middle Ages up until present day. Changing exhibitions are comprised mostly of artworks from Nationalmuseum's unique collection.
