Originally home to the meatpacking industry, then red light district, Vesterbro has evolved during the last years. The strip clubs can still be found today but for the most part Vesterbro is a hip mix of families, artsy people, artists and home to numerous galleries, boutiques and workshops. As in the meatpacking district in New York, this area too has gone through changes. Slaughterhouses have become home to trendy restaurants and hip stores.
Vesterbro is considered somewhat of an epicentrum of the hipster scene and is perfect for doing some serious shopping. Istedgade and Sønder Boulevard are lined with specialy stores and trendy boutiques. If you need a rest in between, simply head to one of the cozy cafes or restaurants located along the way.
An absolute highlight which shouldn't be missed is Absalon, a renovated church turned community house right on Vesterbro’s Sønder Boulevard. It is a place to meet and hang out. A place to play bingo, watch movies or eat dinner with 150 people you don't know. It is like Vesterbro itself, a cheerful place, sure to put a smile on your face.
