San Marco with its stables and barracks was once considered the outskirts of the city. Today it is a bustling neighborhood with cozy restaurants and bars, full of studentlife. Aside from numerous magnificent palaces from the Middle Ages and Renaissance, San Marco is home to the University of Florence with its botanical garden, one of the oldest in Europe.

The dominican convent of San Marco is now a museum where visitors can see not only Savonarola's cell but also the beautiful frescoes from talented Fra Angelico. The renowned Galleria del'Accademia, is home to Michelangelo's David and many other works of art including Bonaguida's Tree of Life.
