San Giovanni can be considered the historical center of Florence. At the heart of it one finds Santa Maria del Fiore the Duomo, with its Campanile designed by Giotto. The Cupola, a work of Brunelleschi was the largest cupola built at the time. Located close by is the Baptistery San Giovanni, assumed to have been built in the 4th century making it one of Florence's oldest buildings. It's cupola is elaborately decorated with mosaics from the 13th century. Numerous Florentines such as Dante are said to have been baptised here.

The Piazza della Repubblica with its surrounding elegant bars and restaurants and historic carousel is a popular meeting point. The Piazza della Signoria with the Palazzo Vecchio (the political center of the city) the Loggia dei Lanzi, the Neptune Fountain and Michelangelo's David are popular attractions of San Giovanni. The Uffizi galleries are known for their extraordinary collection of art, and the Ponte Vecchio, Florence's oldest bridge crossing the Arno, is a sight not to be missed, especially at sundown.
