Östermalm is one of Stockholm's largest and most expensive districts. On the west it borders Norrmalm along the Birger Jarlsgatan. When the trade fair of 1897 was to take place on the Island of Djurgården it was decided to turn the Strandgata, which at the time was little more than a dusty road, into a grand boulevard. Today Strandvägen with its magnificent buildings along the bank of Nybroviken is Stockholm's most impressive promenade. Over the years Östermalm has advanced to become the city's most prestigious neighborhood, with numerous embassies, renowned shops and restaurants located there.

When in Östermalm, one should not miss Östermalm's Saluhall. Stockholm's beautiful market hall is home to many different specialty stands, which offer swedish as well as international delicacies. It's the perfect place to take a little break while trying some of the delicous food. Whether you're looking for lobster, elk salami or special sweets- you will find it here.

Further highlights are Stureplan, known for its exclusive shopping and vibrant nightlife, Sturebadet (a bath house originally built in 1885) and Dramaten, the Royal Theater.
